University of Waterloo Ontario University Graduate Scholarship (OGS) / Queen Elizabeth II Graduate Scholarship in Science and Technology (QEII-GSST)

The Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS) and Queen Elizabeth II Graduate Scholarship in Science and Technology (QEII-GSST) programs promote excellence in publicly supported universities in Ontario at the Government of Ontario and participating institutions and jointly fund both programs. The government provides two-thirds of the value of the award and the university provides the remaining third.

Students are assessed using an application for the OGS and QEII-GSST at Waterloo. Both directions have equal prestige. The differences between OGS and QEII-GSST scholarships are as follows.

Benefits of University of Waterloo Postgraduate Scholarship

OGS and QEII-GSST each cost $15,000 per year. The award is worth $5,000 per year over two or three years.
Waterloo celebrates the outstanding academic achievement of its undergraduate students by awarding the Presidential Graduate Scholarship (PGS) to students who have achieved OGS or QEII-GSST.

Requirements for University of Waterloo Postgraduate Scholarship

International applicants must hold a valid study permit under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (Canada).
Home applicants must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or protected person under subsection 95(2) of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (Canada).

Minimum educational requirements

Applicants must have an undergraduate grade (minimum A-/80%), in each of the last two years of graduation (full-time equivalent).
Eligibility averages are calculated using grades from your most recent academic history through March 31, 2023, regardless of your current or proposed program applicability or program. Waterloo is required to meet this standard as set by the Ministry of Colleges and Universities of Ontario (MCU).

Lesson plans

The OGS award is open to applicants in all academic subject disciplines (research-based & course-based* programs).
The QEII-GSST award is limited to applicants to research-based courses in STEM disciplines (science, technology, engineering and mathematics).

*Note: Applications for academically based students must show evidence of all the criteria by which their application will be evaluated, including research ability.

International OGS Competition Final Day

On February 1, 2024, at 4:00 p.m. (ET) – Deadline to submit a transcript request web form
February 1, 2024 – Last date for submission of OGS/QEII-GSST application to Department Graduate Coordinator.
February 1, 2024 – Deadline for referees to email resumes to the Graduate Coordinator in the applicant’s department.

Note: Due to the limited number of awards available, international students must be currently enrolled in graduate study at Waterloo or have approved leave/unemployment time by January 1, 2024 to be considered around. All students must be enrolled at all times while holding a scholarship.

House OGS/QEII-GSST Competition Last Day

On February 1, 2024, at 4:00 p.m. (ET) – Deadline to submit a transcript request web form
February 1, 2024 – Last date for submission of OGS/QEII-GSST application to Department Graduate Coordinator.
February 1, 2024 – Deadline for referees to email resumes to the Graduate Coordinator in the applicant’s department.
1 February 2024 – Deadline for applications (if applicable) for admission to a graduate program at Waterloo.
